Jonko Auto Diagnosis Center: Squeal When Steering

Squealing Noise and Difficult Steering

If you notice a loud squeal coming from under the hood, and your car has become more difficult to turn or steer, the culprit is your power steering belt. The belt may squeal due to being worn, inproperly sized, or because it is slipping.

1. Do a Quick Visual Inspection.
Take a look at the belt. If it is in good condition, it likely just needs adjusted to its proper tension. Generally speaking, this is a bit more difficult than it sounds and you will likely want to take it in to have the adjustments made. (There are often multiple pivot and locking bolts and occasionally a special tool set is necessary.) If you do decide to proceed yourself, Jonko recommends using a shop manual or a detailed guide for your auto that delinieates the process in detail.

If the belt appears worn, cracked, or otehrwise damaged, it will need to be replaced.

2. In Rare Cases --
In a few rare cases you will not be able to fix your problem with belt adjustment or replacement. If your power-steering mounting bracket is damaged, broken, or otherwise compromised, your belt may not be able to receive the full amount of tension necessary to power it. In this case, see your mechanic for a detailed diagnosis.
