I just bought this 95 wrangler and it has 99k on it. It has a 2.5l with a five speed transmission. When I shift the gears there is a grinding noise. It is not terrible but something is not right. The previous owners seems to think it may be the clutch. How should I go about diagnosing this problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

am pretty sure ths s a hydraulc clutch set up (master cyl) check the flud level first - maybe a bleed to get started....
A adjustment/inspection of the lnkage if a mechincal setup step 1

I checked the master cyl since it is hydraulic and there is fluid but the reservior and cylinder appear to have residue built up around them. There is a little boot at the cylinder that goes through the firewall with a good amount of liquid on it. I will bleed the line today hopefully if I have time. Any other advice?

Sounds like you might have a master cylinder leaking.

Does it grind when putting it in reverse while sitting still? If not, the clutch is releasing and is not the problem....

I checked while parked and running and it goes into each gear easily. While driving it will sometime not grind if I let the rpms drop way down before I shift. It may be my master cylinder, any other advice?

I am letting the rpms drop way down before i shift. If I am down shifting it will grind no matter what the rpms are at and I am making sure the clutch is pressed all the way down. It is a short grind. I guess I am going to buy the master + slave cylinder assembly and go from there. Does this sound like a good idea.
Thanks

Sounds more like the synchronizers maybe a little worn. Make sure transmission oil is full.

It definitely sounds like worn synchronizers in the transmission.

Can I fix this or does this require a rebuild?

Yes you can fix it but it will require disassembling the transmission to replace the synchronizers!!

I've never took a new one down but bad in the earlier days no special tools were required.
