It is close to time to change my oil, with winter coming on and my 1998 Ford Taurus se stationwagon with 129000 on it and a misfire in the first cylinder, what would be the best choice oil wise to help it through the cold winter months.

It's strange that you would ask for oil advice without addressing the cause of the miss in cylinder 1. Would you want to fix that first?

ISSUE
Ford Motor Company now recommends SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade for servicing any Ford gasoline-powered vehicle regardless of model year.

ACTION
When servicing any Ford gasoline-powered vehicle, use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade motor oil. Refer to the following text for further details.

Both SAE 10W-30 and SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade motor oils have been recommended in the past depending on vehicle model and model year.

Tests have proven SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade motor oil provides the optimum protection and benefits for Ford gasoline engines. At both high and low ambient temperature conditions, SAE 5W-30 provides the best overall protection. It allows faster starts under cold ambient temperatures.

SAE 5W-30 also provides approximately 1/2% increase in fuel economy over SAE 10W-30.

SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade motor oils certified for gasoline engines by the American Petroleum Institute (API) should be used for all service procedures requiring replacement of the motor oil.

The cost to repair the misfire would be over $1200 from the number of estimates I have gotten and I only paid $450 for the car. Most places I took it to said I would be better off putting a rebuilt engine with a warrenty then trying to fix the present engine. So I am just going to drive it till it dies and then go buy another car.

Klotz full synthetic is the best. Look at http://www.autorepairinmesa.com Auto Repair in Mesa AZ for some great automotive articles.

I wouldn't bother wasting money on synthetic oil on an engine you're essentially driving until it dies because of a bad valve. I'd go with the least expensive, API certified, 5W30 engine oil I could find.

sprintdriver - why would indy4192 spend $11.95 per quart on Klotz on a beater he paid $450 for, that he just uses to go to and from work?

I see... I read your misfire thread. I did the exact same thing with my '86 Escort with the red badge of rejection.
I would use any 10w40 on sale. Yellow Pennzoil is a popular choice. The mis-fire will most likely thin the oil out a bit so I would keep it on short OCIs.

Just because the engine is dying a slow death, shouldn't I try and do whatever I can to maximize the life left in the engine? So far I feel with how I am driving and caring for the engine has helped. I have had it with this misfire now for almost 4 months and put on almost 3000 miles on it when some I spoke with didn't think it would last a month. right now it is running fine and I am getting about 20 mpg in the city, but the temps are getting colder and just trying to do whatever I can to help the engine.

Also, I have never gotten consensous on the fuel injector issue. I had some tell me the car's computer will limit that fuel injector as to not damage the cat. I have others tell me that it was okay to unplug it as the car would not send more fuel to the other injectors and I have had some tell me it would be worse to unplug it.

indy4192, I'd continue to use the same oil that got you this far and unplug the injector it it's causing a problem otherwise let it be. It's may be firing, somewhat, at higher RPM's.

TECH II yes there are other post on the misfire condition but this is the only one on the oil issue. He has nothing to gain or lose either way if he doesn't intend to attempt to repair the misfire. Just trying to ride it out till the end. Sorry about the misunderstanding on the post.
