Hey all, first off let me say I should be in Indy watching the drags but I digress, i'm in the garage working on my buds dart sport.

This trans was rebuilt several years ago and never put into service until this last week. i have all forward gears but no reverse. The fluid level is correct, the kick down linkage is correct, I manually put the selector in reverse with no cable attached from under the car and still no reverse. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance and have a nice holiday weekend!

I dropped the pan this morning and found the low/reverse lever "dangling" and some flat peices of steel I assume are the tangs for the band.

Ok, after digging deeper, (removing the valve body) I found the servo spring retainer and snap ring dislodged. This damaged the piston, seal and linkage strut. Hmmm, this could be my problem. lol. I have a spare 727 I removed from a 79' motorhome, I'm going to open it up and use it as a reference as to where the parts go and use what I can to replace the damaged hard parts. I'll have to find a new seal though for the servo. Any suggestions at this point are welcomed. Thanks for listening.

Ok, I fixed it. I borrowed what I needed from the motorhome trans, put in new seals and buttoned it up. Reverse works on the jack stands, tomarrow I will road test it.

Motorhead446,

Sorry I wasn’t around to help you with your 727 problems. I was on an extended “Labor Day” weekend and just got back this morning. I’m glad to hear you figured it out on your own. Self analysis can be the best teacher. wink.gif Anyone who owns a 727 or works on one must have this book.

While making the maiden voyage of this long term project(10+yrs) I found I have no 2-3 shift. I know the band is is not loose, but may actually be too tight. While the valve body was out I felt the strut bar for looseness and it was minimal. This trans was "rebuilt years ago by the owner and a freind of his. The owner states that a B&M shift kit was installed. When I had the VB out I was not impressed with the cleanliness which leads me to question wether the kit was installed properly.

I'm still working on some tuning issues and will try another road test. This car has an original holley pro jection unit, msd ignition, edelbrock air fuel monitor on a 383 with 11.1 pistons, mopar .528 lift cam, 4.11 8 3/4 rear, rear discs, cal tracs, ect..

I've been putting this car together in my spare time (which is minimal) for the last three years. I hope to return it this weekend so I can get busy with my projects.

[B][I]motorhead446,

Hey buddy. If you're anything like me you should eat this up. Have fun.

727 Band Adjustment

To make the 2-3 shift, the kick down band has to hold until the front clutch is applied and then it has to be quickly released. This timing is very important; too early of a band release causes the engine to "rev up" until the front clutch is applied. Too late of a band release and/or too early of a clutch apply is more common; this gives a "putting on the brakes sensation" which is actually called shift overlap (Since the rear clutch is applied in both 1st and 2nd, and nothing has to be released, kick down band timing is not as critical in the 1-2 shift). Delay in the kick down band-release and premature clutch-apply both cause overlap and, therefore, friction material wear.

Loosen the lock nuts and tighten the adjusters. At this point you shouldn’t be able to turn the drive shaft in either direction. Now loosen either of the adjusters until the drive shaft until you can barely turn the drive shaft by hand. Now loosen the adjuster another ˝ turn and tighten the lock nut. Do the same with the other adjuster. This is the only time you should be trying to turn the drive shaft in the opposite direction. When you can barely turn the drive shaft by hand, loosen the adjuster another ˝ turn and tighten the lock nut. Torqueflite 727

Fluid Type (Dextron II)

Front Band (72 Lbs back 2 1/2 to 3 turns

Rear band (72" Lbs back off 2 turns)

I came across that book while searching for info on this trans. I plan to buy it today.

You're right, I do soak up info like that! I'll get the heap back on the jack stands and drop the pan.

I just started my midnight turns on wednesday so my responses and progress may be sporadic.

motorhead446,

Hey buddy, I'm here. It may take me a little while to get back to you but I'm here. I'm still in Lancaster building the "Nova". Should be here till the new year. The whole project is behind.

I feel some "Wood" comin on from this man. Reminds me of when I got out of "Nam" and had nothing to do.

For a while there (at least for me) there was no life after "Nam"

Me and my cousin (Old Greek Guy) threw together a "Blown" 360 Twister. Turned out to be a 9 second car. Fast for those day's.

I adjusted the bands per the above procedure with no luck. I'm not sure what is causing the problem at this point.

Since I had a stock functioning valve body handy so I installed it. I discoved that the small spring above the accumulator piston was missing in the dart. This may have been the problem to begin with concerning third gear. I installed the stock valve body anyway and the car now shifts into third. So, I have to wonder if it was the missing spring or the valve body. I am thinking of reinstalling the original vb and see if it works.

I never found the problem with the 727 torqueflite. I returned the car to the owner and suggested having a professional trans tech look at it. I have since moved onto other projects including the 66 coronet 500 I bought this year. As always, thanks for the input and guidence.

I returned the car early this year. My job did not include fixing the trans, I just gave it a shot. I don't get to visit here that much as you can see. I noticed Left tools int he rain has not posted in awhile, I hope he is ok.
