Hello all, my 96 S-10 2wd, 2.2l is having some shift problems. Each condition is not consistant. One condition is the trans will seem to be in high gear when starting off from a stop. When this condition occurs, it feels as though the trans is slipping. Sometimes I can manually shift from L1 thru the gears to drive and it will work fine, other times it will not. Another condition is when stopped after driving in high gear, it does not shift down to low gear. Sometimes manually down shifting will work, sometimes it will not. Strangley, the speedometer stopped working when these conditions started.
Sometimes, the trans will not upshift when in drive from low gear.
Something I noticed when driving and waiting for an up shift from low gear, at high rpm, I let off the throttle and the truck does not "lunge" for lack of a better word. It continues rolling at the same speed.
Thanks in advance!

No speedo yet. i'm changing the filter and fluid now. I do have an engine light, but it is for an egr issue. I don't know when the last service was done. I have had the truck for about a year. The seller sold it becauuse of trans problems. I found a broken tail housing when I got it home. I replaced the housing and seal, leveled the fluid and started driving it with out any issues.

The fluid did not look unusually bad, the magnet had alot of fine material, almost the size of filings. No "chunks".

I am now having trouble getting the shift lever to work. Is there a procedure for reconnecting the shift cable. The lever will only move between nuetral and reverse. I cannot start the engine because of this. I disconnected the cable from the trans to remove the cable bracket which is fastened with the oil pan bolts.

When I removed the cable from the trans shaft I removed the lever from the shaft not the cable from the ball stud. I must have moved the lever/cable too far while loosing the retaining nut on the lever. The trans shaft moves thru all of the gears okay. The shift lever at the column only moves between neutral and reverse.
I purchased an subscription to alldata for this model. I am currently researching the repair procedures.

Ok, i replaced the shift cable and that solved the shift lever issue. I finished the fluid and filter change and that solved my other shift issues. My speedometer still does not work. Any suggestions before i dive in?
BTW, i fixed this about 10 days ago, but i've been working 85-95 hrs a week so no time to post, or sleep, or think.lol

I agree, make sure its plugged in for starters, check connection fo wiring...then, remove the sensor, and look in the hole, see if the reluctor ring is either broken or cracked, this can interfere with the operation of the speedo...

i can fix broken, but i cant fix stupid...
