Auto Tips

Checking Coolant

Never attempt to remove the radiator cap when the coolant is hot or the car is running. The pressurized coolant may burst out and severly burn you if the cap is removed while it is hot.

Sun Damage

In addition to using a sun shield in your windows, you can minimize the damaging effects of sunlight by parking your auto in different directions or locations to reduce exposure of any one area to sunlight.

Brake Noise

If your brakes make unusual noises first thing in the morning it may not be a cause for concern. Oftentimes, autos that are parked outside in humid areas accumulate a bit of rust on the pads overnight. After applying the brakes a few times the noise should disappear.

Need Waxing?

To check if your auto needs waxed simply sprinkle a bit of water on the hood and notice what happens. If the water will not bead, it is time for a new coat of wax.

Timing Belt

Check your timing belt! All belts wear out. If your timing belt goes, you risk serious and expensive engine damage. Check your owners manual and replace timing belts as recommended.

Check Lubrication

As a general rule, check your grease fittings and steering/suspension lubrication every 3000 miles. Do this at the same time you perfom your regular oil change to avoid forgetting.

Cruise Problems?

If you run into any strange problems with your cruise control, check your cyclops tailight. In a variety of late model autos, replacing a bad bulb will remedy the situation.

Steering Linkage

Every time you hit a bump or chuck in the road, your steering linkage gets a good whack. On autos equipped with larger than standard tires this force is multiplied. Using a steering damper can greatly reduce the problem this presents.

Octane Rating

Octane is a flammable hydro-carbon in gasoline. The octane rating is essentially a measure of a gasolines ability to avoid knock. Use the rating recommended by the manufacturer in your owner's manual and do not waste money buying high octane if you do not need it.

Periodic Maintenance

In addition to oil changes and tire rotation, don't forget periodic maintenance including lubrication for oft neglected parts. (Universal joints, steering linkage, transmission shift linkage, etc...)
